Indoor Air Pollution (Sick house syndrom)

- Indoor air pollutants may be up to 100 times higher
than outdoor levels. (Environmental Protection Agency) - Most people spend 90% of their time indoors. (America
Lung Association) - Dirty ventilation systems and contaminated ductwork
combined are a 50.9% contributor to sick building syndrome. (Healthy
Buildings International) - 50% of all illnesses are either caused or aggravated
by polluted indoor air. (American College of Allergists) - Legionnaire’s disease was spawned in air conditioning
ducts. (ALA) - Indoor airpollution is the primary cause in as many
as 50 million cases of occupational chronic respiratory disease each
year. (World Health Organization) - A buildup of .042 inches of dirt on a heating or cooling
coil can result in a decrease in efficiency of 21% (EPA) - One out of six people who suffer from allergies do
so because of the direct result of the fungi and bacteria in the air
duct systems. (Total Health & Better Health Magazine) - As many as one billion people, mostly women and children,
are regularly exposed to levels of indoor air pollution exceeding WHO
guidelines by up to 100 times. (WHO)
We humans have the ability to get used
to most all conditions. Our bodies adjust to cold as well as warm conditions
and our noses, or to be more correct our sense of smell, also has the
ability to adjust.
Have you had double glazing installed in
recent times? Let me tell you about a surprising discovery, which was
made a few years after the Berlin wall came down.
When East and West Germany joined up again,
the West poured money into the Eastern sector in order to rejuvenate the
badly maintained and out-dated factories and houses. Factory chimneys
were belching out fumes at a frightening rate. It was possible to smell
industrial areas from miles away, even before they could be seen.
Most houses were still heated with coal
fires.
Cars were driven by two stroke engines belching out blue exhaust fumes.
When it rained, the washing on the line turned black.
The amount of money required to rebuild
East Germany was staggering and nearly broke West Germany’s economy. Coal
mines were closed, and whole factory estates were rebuilt or scrapped.
Hundreds and thousands of houses were refurbished. Mostly with double
glazing. Coal fires were replaced with central heating and cold and drafty
houses were insulated. The nasty smell of sulfur slowly disappeared and
people began to breathe more easily – or so they thought.
To everyone’s surprise however the rate of asthma and alergies as well
as other respiratory diseases increased at an alarming rate.
No one could understand this! Why, after
having cleaned up the environment and reduced air polluting industries,
should there be an increase in these ailments?
Government studies urgently instigated
came up with the amazing result that the air pollution inside the newly
refurbished homes had increased tremendously. Having sealed off and insulated
the houses, fumes given off by new furniture, wallpaper, carpets and paintings
could no longer escape through drafty door and window fittings, and resulted
in the air inside the houses being up to 50 to 60 times more polluted
than the air outside.
We have all expirienced the smell in furniture
shops. We notice it as soon as we walk in. It is quite distinct, but do
the staff working there still notice it? How about staff in fish and chips
shops? Hospitals, garages and most offices have a distinct smell.
How about the time when you visited a friend’s
house – the one with the two dogs or a cat? Of course you smelled it!
But it does not need dogs and cats to make a home smell differently. People
smoking in a house or a new carpet might do it.
Millions of pounds are spent anually on
so called air fresheners!
The industry is booming – but what do most
if not all of these so called air fresheners do? They over-power unpleasant
smells with a stronger smelling chemical!!! And where do the original
smells come from? Mainly from chemicals – glues in our furniture and carpets
as well as wall papers. House hold cleaning materials like washing up
liquids, floor cleaning mixtures, oven sprays etc. All of these are chemically
based.
During an accident in a French factory
some poisonous gasses leaked into the surrounding area. Years and years
later babies were still being born with defects and health disorders.
It was only then discovered that the poisonous gasses were still being
extruded from walls and other materials long after anyone could smell
or otherwise detect them.
The sad truth is that even in our clean
and well maintained homes and offices, there are fumes and gases being
extruded on a continuos basis.
Just because we no longer notice them,
does not mean that they have disappeared. Either we have got used to them
or they reduced to such an extend that we can no longer smell them. This
does however not mean that they can not still do us harm. And harm they
certainly do. The respiratory diseases as well as allergies are on an
increase. Over powering smells with so called air fresheners is just adding
to the problem. And we strongly recommended NOT to use them, with a few
exceptions.
Cl’Air Air fresheners are one of these exceptions. Manufactured entirely
from natural ingredients the new and revolutionary concept actually eliminates
chemical pollutants.
Only chemicals of a certain size can enter
our bodies. If the molecule is too large, our protective systems won’t
let them pass. Body lotions are specifically designed to penetrate our
skins. Medical inhalers do the same through our lungs and air passages.
However if one of those penetrating molecules would be bound to another
larger one, it would no longer be able to be absorbed by the skin or the
lungs and would therefore be rendered harmless. Cl’Air Air cleaners do
just that. Harmful gaseous pollutants are encapsulated by especially designed
molecules in the active ingredients of the air cleaners and render most
health threatening gases harmless.
Oxygen Therapy
Without it we last a few minutes – Oxygen – surely must be the most important element in our life.
Ever since the invention of the wheel we are hell bent on reducing the amounts available to us. Cutting down our forests has activated the green peace movement to a certain degree. Far less has been said about the fact that most of the oxygen we breathe is actually produced by the tiny little creatures (Plankton) in our oceans. Why else do so many of us dream of retireing next to the sea. It makes us feel healthier, we seem to have more energy and a better appetite. This is due to the fact that there is more Oxygen in the air which stimulates all our organs.
So let us not forget the oceans when we talk about destroying our environment.
